Risk Mitigation Accounting (RMA) is a proposal for a new accounting model designed by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) to present the economic effects of risk management activities at financial institutions more transparently and accurately in financial statements.

At its core, the new model establishes a closer link between risk management and accounting. Its goal is to give investors clearer visibility into how banks manage repricing risk and how effectively that exposure is mitigated.

The proposed amendments to IFRS 9 and IFRS 7, along with the potential replacement of IAS 39, pose significant challenges not only from a technical perspective but also in terms of organization and systems.

Project History

Since 2013, the IASB has been working on a way to reflect banks’ risk management activities in financial reporting in a more accurate and transparent manner.

For many years, this project was known as Dynamic Risk Management (DRM). Due to its complex scope, various concepts and models were developed over time, only to be repeatedly revised or discarded based on stakeholder feedback.

The key concepts and terminology associated with this topic are introduced in the two following publications.

Current Project Status and Outlook

In December 2025, the IASB published an Exposure Draft, renaming the model Risk Mitigation Accounting (RMA) and further developing its existing ideas and terminology.

While this publication addressed several open questions, key points remain unresolved from our perspective, and various areas still require further clarification.

Stakeholders currently have the opportunity to submit comments and suggestions for improvement during a feedback period. This is likely the last opportunity to significantly influence the project. The deadline for submitting feedback is November 30, 2026.

Our Services

The complexity of the RMA accounting model, as well as the associated requirements for financial reporting and documentation, necessitate cross-functional analyses and decisions. Furthermore, it is reasonable to assume that the proposed repeal of IAS 39 will have significant implications for existing reporting entities.
